DRUMMIT 2 - This Saturday 23rd May 2009 3 PM Live on Gayelle

A note from the Organizers of the Event:

Playing for Change – Second Drummit Coming

The Truth Drummers wish to express our thanks to the patriots who came out and stood their ground against unnecessary police intimidation at the St James Amphitheatre on April 18th, 2009. We also thank the Senior Superintendent, Western Division, who arrived finally to diffuse an almost violent situation.

Truth Drummers are an independent group of non aligned community based and community supporting organisations born out of the ‘anti-smelter alliance’. We hereby invite all citizens to the ‘Second Drummit’ on 23rd May from 3:00pm to 6:00pm at the St James Amphitheatre.

This Drummit Event will pay tribute to the 22 Hosey Drummers who were shot dead in 1884, prompting the Hosey Riots as well as pay silent tribute to the ‘little drummer boy’ from the Mawasi Experience who was senselessly gunned down a few weeks ago.

The theme of the Second Drummit is "Our Water, Our Food, Our Energy - Our Future".

The public will hear firsthand from frontline communities across Trinidad & Tobago facing anti-sustainable development. We will examine the consequences of not having a long term energy security plan while the national gas tank is less than half empty and dropping.

We will also explore the threats associated with further heavy gas based industrialization and the failure of the decision making process to identify social or ecological benefits and losses, with specific focus on the proposed steel and aluminium smelters.

The betrayal of the national community’s ‘right to water’ - by exposing our naturally occurring drinking water to pollution from a deregulated quarrying sector - by building more desalination plants for water to be sold to citizens for foreign private profit will also be explored.

We will have several exciting ‘cultural’ presentations and also launch our national ‘Sustainability First’ Initiative.

All Drummers are invited to bring your drums and come play for change. The Second Drummit will be televised live in The Gayelle.

Red Earth Festival on Gayelle The Channel

During the Month of May, Gayelle The Channel will be bringing highlights from the Red Earth Festival taking place from 29th to 31st of May 2009.

ABOUT THE RED EARTH FESTIVAL
The Red Earth Festival takes place within the beautiful green spaces of the Chaguaramas National Park – at breath taking sites like the Bamboo Cathedral, the Cuesua dry river bed, Bellerand Park and the Tracking Station.  The Festival is held in celebration of World Environment Day and seeks to encourage environmental awareness through the arts and other outdoor events including stargazing, nature walks, beach clean-ups, walking tours of medicinal plants, poetry, dance and unplugged music performances. In addition the Festival seeks to encourage respect for and understanding of cultural diversity - by showcasing the beauty, dignity, differences and commonality between world peoples, through the common language of art.  The Red Earth Festival is organized by the non-profit organization Red Earth, which works in partnership with the Chaguaramas Development Authority, Greenlight Network, Gayelle-The Channel and Young TT. Among the activities planned for Red Earth 2009 are – ‘The Screening Room’ featuring short films and documentaries on environmental concerns; children’s activities including storytelling and a clay workshop; a smoke ceremony by the Carib Community - to bless the performance space and performances and workshops by the Australian Aboriginal group ‘Descendance’, who will showcase traditional songs, dance and story-telling, using the didgeridoo, body painting and ritual chants.

DREAM TIME - THE THEME FOR RED EARTH FESTIVAL 2009 Dream Timethe time before time, the time of all things. We remember the Earth….her secrets and wisdom. We know her stories. She is alive.  If we are to save the Earth, now is the time ... We can dream a new dream………start dreaming.  (taken from the Aboriginal concept of creation & man’s inter-connectedness with nature)

Stay tuned to http://www.gayelletv.com/redearth.html  for more information on Red Earth and Gayelle The Channel.
